Apple doesn't intentionally 'slow' down old iPhones

Apple reveals new gender-neutral emoji The gender-neutral Apple emojis
Garry Little | 11 October, 2017, 00:26

The tech giant has been steadily increasing its collection of emoji available to iPhone, iPad and Mac users over recent years, and over the weekend they announced hundreds of new icons are coming. Every update in software is built with the latest hardware in mind, and it may be that this slows down an older phone. Not according to a new set of benchmarks from Futuremark. On the other hand, only Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel consumers are operating the new version of the OS.

While new batteries have greater longevity, through new electrode, electrolyte and controller technology, the battery in your four-year-old iPhone 5S is nearly certainly worse than when it was new. Of course, newer models will be faster and more efficient than older ones, but in reality, your old iPhone is no slower than it was before the new one was released. The performance variations were essentially nonexistent, the release said, reporting only "minor variations that fall well within normal levels", for both CPU and GPU. Read on to learn about what you might expect to find once iOS 11.1 is released. No sign that Apple is slowing down your iPhone there, so let's look at the CPU.

Processor performance was equally consistent leading Futuremark to conclude that "it is clear that iOS updates have not had a significant effect on performance". That resulted in several bouts of battery drain issues, but it also slowed down the performance of the app. Newer features might not be as crisp and snappy. One thing you will notice with the new emojis is that there are many that are now "genderless" since that seems to be what people have been asking for. The results are submitted from iPhone owners who've installed its 3DMark benchmarking app.

If you're sick and exhausted of running into problems with iOS updates, iOS 11 or otherwise, you have the power to do something about it. Download the iOS 11.1 beta, again it's free, and dig into the software.
