Mohamed Salah sent Egypt to the World Cup finals after the Liverpool winger's injury-time penalty kick secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Congo in Alexandria.

They ensured they would finish on top of their group after moving to 12 points, gaining an unassailable four-point lead over second-placed Uganda with one match to spare.

With the qualification, Egypt became the second African country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, with a 2-1 win against Congo in Alexandria.

Egypt's victory came on the second last-minute goal to get to the World Cup in as many days, with Costa Rica pulling off the same thing on Saturday.

After a 0-0 first half, Salah eventually calmed the Egyptian fans nerves by breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute.

Congo substitute Arnold Bouka Mouto leveled in the 86th minute with a ferocious left-footed volley that stunned Egypt's goalkeeper Essam el-Hadary. Fans honking auto horns and waving Egypt's red, white and black flags took the streets across the country.

In the three decades since their last World Cup appearance, Egypt have won four Africa Cup of Nations titles - in 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010 - but never taken that form into World Cup qualifying.

The desperation to qualify ahead of the game was so great that Egypt's Argentinian coach Hector Cuper admitted he was taking medication for high blood pressure.

The game looked to be headed for a draw when Egypt were awarded a penalty.
