Ben McAdoo won 11 games in his debut campaign with the Giants, but his second season raises some serious questions about his coaching acumen. The Chargers have been a bend-don't-break unit under new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, but all that's done is make for tantalizing close losses.

Both teams were winless coming into the game.

Philip Rivers hit Melvin Gordon for the running back's second receiving touchdown of the game with 3:04 remaining in the game to get the win. A fourth receiver went down late in the fourth quarter when Beckham had to be carted off the field with an ankle injury.

Prior to Darkwa's score, the Giants got a safety when Chargers center Spencer Pulley snapped the ball before Rivers was ready.

The Giants (0-5) jumped out to a 9-0 first-quarter lead, which included their first points scored on offense in the first quarter since a 22-yard field goal by Robbie Gould in the 2016 regular-season finale against Washington.

Darkwa's 23-yard rush was also the team's longest of the season.

It was needed considering the Giants lost wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Sterling Shepard to ankle injuries in the first half.

Manning's attempt to rally the Giants in the final minute ended when he was intercepted by Tre Boston just inside Los Angeles territory.

Rivers' tenure with the Chargers has been good, but the team advanced to one AFC title game, losing to the Patriots after the 2007 season.

Safeties are one of the most exciting plays in football. That opened up an opportunity for Roger Lewis, who seized it with a 29-yard touchdown catch to give the Giants a lead midway through the third quarter.
