At least five people including a police officer were injured after a suspect stabbed a police officer with a knife and deliberately plowed into pedestrians on Edmonton's busiest downtown.

"Currently, we believe this is an individual who acted alone, although the investigation is in its early stages", said Chief Knecht.

The officer wounded in the first incident was not immediately identified, and it was not immediately clear the extent of injuries for the pedestrians.

An hour later, the driver of a U-Haul truck escaped the police checking underway in downtown.

A suspect, aged around 30, has been arrested and the authorities believe he acted alone. Police say a vehicle rammed a traffic control barricade and sent an officer flying into the air 15 feet.

The officer was conscious when taken to hospital, Pattison said, but he did not specify the nature of his injuries.

"To the best of our knowledge, this was a lone wolf attack", Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson said.

Brian McNeill was hanging out with a group of friends in the parking lot just west of Boston Pizza at 106th Street when the van and police vehicles tore down the street.

Finally, the UHaul truck flipped on Jasper Avenue - the driver was apprehended and is in custody.

They said they now believe the suspect acted alone, but were not ruling out others' involvement.

A 30-year-old man was arrested after the crash; while police are still investigating, they now believe the suspect acted alone in both incidents.

Knecht said the man was known to police, but did not release his name.

The driver jumped out and stabbed the officer several times before fleeing from the scene.

Edmonton has been hit by a terrorist attack.

In a press conference, broadcast live on Facebook, police said they are treating the incident as an act of terrorism.

"We can not - and will not - let violent extremism take root in our communities", he added.
