The last student killing inside a New York City public school was on February 26, 1992, when a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old were shot dead in a Brooklyn high school by a 15-year-old.

McCree was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Barnabas Hospital, and LaBoy remains in critical condition. The suspect had been feuding with the victims since the beginning of the school year, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said at an afternoon news conference.

When asked if he was picked on, 18-year-old Abel Cedeno replied "yeah" before detectives escorted him into a vehicle ahead of his arraignment expected Thursday.

Some studies have found that black and Hispanic students in charter schools are more likely to attend predominantly nonwhite schools than their peers in traditional schools, partly because charter schools tend to be located in urban areas and are often established specifically to serve low-income students of color.

In addition to murder, manslaughter, and attempted murder charges, Cedeno, who lives in The Bronx, also faces one count of attempted manslaughter, two counts of assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The student accused of stabbing a classmate to death and seriously injuring another during history class was different from other guys and had been picked on since the school year started, fellow students and police said.

Cedeno walked out of the classroom where he stabbed the boys, handed his Schrade switchblade to a counselor in the hallway and walked to the assistant principal's office to wait for police, officials said.

Nine New York City charter groups are part of the coalition, ranging from individual schools like Community Roots Charter School in Brooklyn to larger networks, including six Success Academy schools.

The school descended into chaos in the immediate aftermath of the stabbing. They planned to visit the school on Thursday to meet with staff. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina said they were saddened by the attack and understood the fear parents would have.

After the incident, parents of several students in the elementary school - housed in the same building where the incident took place - raised concerns and voiced anger at the lack of metal detectors in the premises and demanded action.

The father rushed to the school, where he saw his daughter, a kindergartener, through a window waving to him. "And they're crying, wondering what is going on, and the school didn't even call me".
