Lest IKEA customers spend precious weekends and vacation days assembling low-priced furniture based on wordless instructions, the company has announced it will buy San Francisco-based on-demand task-doer service TaskRabbit, i.e. the Uber for handymen and those well versed in assembling IKEA wall units. Recode reports that the Swedish home-goods giant has purchased the on-demand work app TaskRabbit for an undisclosed amount.

None of TaskRabbit's 65 employees will be laid off as a result of the acquisition, and the company plans to hire more workers, said Tod Francis, a managing director at Shasta Ventures, a TaskRabbit investor, in an email. It now operates in the US and London, according to the release.

"In a fast changing retail environment, we continuously strive to develop new and improved products and services to make our customers' lives a little bit easier", Ikea CEO Jesper Brodin said in a press release. "We will be able to learn from TaskRabbit's digital expertise, while also providing Ikea customers additional ways to access flexible and affordable service solutions to meet the needs of today's customer".

The furniture seller said Thursday that it is buying online on-demand services platform TaskRabbit, which lets users hire people to help them move, clean up the house or assemble furniture.

The transaction was signed Monday and is expected to close in October.

Ms. Brown-Philpot and the rest of TaskRabbit's executive team were "committed to staying with the company for the future and well beyond", he said.

IKEA Group owns and operates 357 IKEA stores in 29 countries and operates a growing ecommerce business with over two billion visits to IKEA.com every year.

TaskRabbit will retain its San Francisco headquarters and operate as a standalone company that will continue to partner with other retailers and commercial partners, said TaskRabbit spokesman Adi Raval.

Ikea already has an official partnership with TaskRabbit in the UK.
