The Army killed a Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Abdul Qayoom Najar, while he was trying to infiltrate into the Kashmir Valley from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Tuesday morning.

SSP Baramulla, Imtiyaz Hussain said Najar was most dreaded militant in Kashmir's militant history and was involved in at least 50 killings of civilians, policemen and other force personnel. Hizb's Pakistan-based leadership announced the ouster of Najar and he formed Lashkar-e-Islam.

He was summoned to Pak-administered Kashmir by Hizb chief Syed Salahuddin to sort out differences and was returning to Kashmir on his directions to take charge of and revive the "Hizbul Mujahideen whose commanders of North Kashmir Pervaiz Wani and of South Kashmir Yasin Yatoo were killed recently". Najar was also reportedly unhappy as the Hizb high command had shifted focus to cadres operating in Tral instead of his cadres operating in north Kashmir.

Defence Ministry sources said the Army also foiled an attack by the Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) in Kupwara in the afternoon.

Giving details about the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant commander's death, Hussain said Nazar was baptized into militancy in 1999 when he killed Abdul Majid Dar, the then estranged operational commander of the group.

Curfew like restrictions have been imposed in apple township of Sopore, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir district of Baramulla as a precautionary measure. "Armed intruders retreated", an Indian Army official said. A resident of Sopore town, he joined militancy barely at an age of 16.

"Security agencies kept on receiving regular inputs about the infiltration of militants along the LoC in Uri". He was arrested in 1992 and became an active militant again on his release in 1995. Neutralising him would have been very hard as he was already heading a huge network in Sopore, Palhallan, Pattan, Handwara areas of Bandipora and Baramulla. He had been active in Kashmir for the last 17 years, as per reports.
