Swells generated by Jose are affecting Bermuda, the Bahamas, the northern coasts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and much of the US east coast.

Elsewhere, Hurricane Norma weakened to a tropical storm as it moves closer to Mexico in the Pacific while Tropical Storm Lee has formed in the Atlantic far from land, heading west.

The system is expected to become a tropical storm later Saturday and possibly a hurricane when it reaches the already-storm beaten Leeward Islands early in the week, forecasters said.

As of 11 a.m. Saturday, Jose was about 480 miles south-southeast of North Carolina's Cape Hatteras, moving northwest at 9 mph with sustained winds of 80 mph.

The Category 1 storm is expected to move north through Tuesday morning, where it will sit off the mid-Atlantic coast and continue to churn local surf and heighten the risk of risky rip currents.

Tropical Storm Maria will become Hurricane Maria on Sunday, according to the latest forecast.

Maria is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane and slam the Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands with damaging winds, flooding rainfall and storm surge late Monday through Tuesday.

St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Dominica have also been put on watch.

If the storm tracks close enough, it's possible that a few outer rain bands with gusty winds could be felt along the Outer Banks on Monday.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Lee slipped back to tropical depression force in the Atlantic and Tropical Storm Otis was gaining force fall out in the Pacific.

Much can change before then, and the storm may drift out to sea, Henson said.

If the storm tracks southeast of Nantucket, Jose will act like a fall nor'easter, with an impact focused mainly on the Cape and Islands.

Jose's maximum sustained winds have decreased to about 85 miles per hour, the NHC said.

The storm has been slowing down over the past day or so, beyond this weekend is where Maria's forecast track gets tricky.

Tropical storm watches have be issued for portions of the Lesser Antilles.

We are now watching three named tropical systems in the Atlantic. A watch has been issued for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin, St. Maarten, St. Barthelemy, Anguilla, Saba and St. Eustatius. Forecasters said the storm was weakening and its center was likely to remain offshore.
