India gave a befitting response to Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi at the United Nations in NY this week as India's first secretary with the permanent mission to the UN Eenam Gambhir termed the neighbouring country as Terroristan.

"The reference to counter-terrorism has been a common thread" in nearly all the statements from the multilateral meetings External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj attended in the last three days, Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

Addressing the annual session, Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj rejected allegations by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi at the world body earlier in the week in which he accused India of state-sponsored terrorism and violating human rights. Eenam Gambhir, First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, said, "Even as terrorists thrive in Pakistan and roam its streets with impunity, we have heard it lecture about the protection of human rights in India".

Her response was another bitter exchange between India and Pakistan, with Swaraj following up the strong description of the neighbour as "Terroristan" by saying Islamabad has rebuffed all Indian initiatives to normalise and improve bilateral ties.

"When Pakistan's PM Abbasi was accusing India of human rights violations, those listening were commenting, "Look who's talking".

"They reaffirmed their commitment to an expeditious adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations". Pakistan's Prime Minister must answer why his nation rejected the peace offer?

Ms Swaraj said, regional prosperity, connectivity and cooperation can take place only in an atmosphere of peace and security which remains at serious risk in the region. If we continue to differentiate between good terrorists and bad terrorists, how can we fight together?

"We are discussing turbulence and change across the world, but the one organisation created to address world affairs is beset by its own problems", Swaraj said in her address.

Swaraj is in NY for the 72nd annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In her speech, Swaraj suggested an alliance between International Solar Alliance and New Development Bank.

In a fiery yet articulated speech, she asked Pakistan to introspect whether talks on terror are anywhere close to the action it takes. The traditional method is through incremental levels of aid and hand-holding. All our economic programmes have a principal goal, the empowerment of the poor...
