Using an August smart lock, users can allow delivery drivers a one-time use code that they utilize to gain entry to the residence.

Walmart is partnering with Deliv and a "smart locks" company to test a new service that would deliver food products inside customers' homes and refrigerators even when they are not home, the retail giant said in a press release emailed to Retail Dive. They'll put packages in the foyer, put groceries in the fridge and leave, Business Insider said.

The new frontier of delivery was announced today with a post in the "innovation" section of Walmart's blog by VP of eCommerce Strategy and Business Operations Sloan Eddleston, who says the service began with the company wondering how it could help busy families like his own ensure that heir fridge was always stocked. The service will need to be adequately paid for by those who sign up for it, making it a premium service that is generally outside of Walmart's traditional consumer base. Despite the fact that it would actually be Deliv employees entering customers' homes and depositing orders, shoppers will still associate the delivery service with Walmart.

This is the first time that Walmart had trialed a service where delivery personnel would directly enter a customer's home, but its subsidiary Jet.com recently struck a deal with smart access provider Latch to improve deliveries in urban markets. If they have cameras set up in the home, customers can watch as their orders are dropped off.

If the tests goes well, the Walmart is interested in expanding the service.

"And we want to do more in the future by delivering groceries and other orders in whatever location works best for our customers - inside the house for some and in the fridge/freezer in the garage for others".

The effort is one of many e-commerce innovations the retailer has developed as it continues to battle with Amazon. Sam's Club, which is owned by Walmart, has been using that firm since previous year in Miami to test deliveries.
