Although Lee is the next name on our list of tropical systems, our focus will be mainly on Maria after Jose passes.

The storm's sustained winds are 75 mph and Jose is moving north at 7 mph, slightly slower than it was traveling three hours earlier.

The National Hurricane Center's latest projections show Jose diminishing to a tropical storm by 2 a.m. Wednesday before veering to the northeast.

Hurricane Jose is traveling toward the East Coast of the USA and could affect an area from North Carolina to New England, according to the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). It had winds of 40 miles per hour and gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

Various computer forecasts have Maria taking a more northerly path than Irma once it passes north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, with most taking it into the Atlantic Ocean. As she sets her sights on Puerto Rico, Maria's winds will increase yet again, and she will likely become a Category 3 on Tuesday.

"This storm promises to be catastrophic for our island", he said.

A coastal flood watch is in effect through Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Watches have been issued for St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Dominica as the strong tropical wave to the east of the island chain was upgraded to Potential Tropical Cyclone Fifteen, said the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for...

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles.

Meanwhile farther north in the Atlantic of the eastern coast of the U.S., Hurricane Jose continues its march forward.

If Hurricane Jose moves farther east or weakens, impacts on the East End could be mild.

A third system in the Atlantic, Tropical Depression Lee, was just under 1,900 nautical miles east-southeast of Bermuda at 6pm yesterday.
