A 7.1 magnitude quake has struck central Mexico, killing at least 200 people and leaving many more trapped in buildings in the capital, Mexico City.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was near Puebla state town of Raboso, around 123 kilometers southeast of Mexico City. On Wednesday, President Pena Nieto said 22 bodies were found in the debris of an elementary school in Mexico City that collapsed. He said another 30 children and eight adults were missing.

The natural disaster comes just days after Mexico was hit by an 8.1 magnitude tremor, the biggest to hit Mexico in a century, killing at least 98 people.

The Voice is celebrating its 35th birthday this year.

Buildings across Mexico City spent the day holding preparation drills for the anniversary of an 8.0 magnitude quake that struck in 1985, according to the Associated Press.

Residents of Mexico City, a conurbation of some 20 million people, slept in the streets last night and 40% of homes were without power, said Reuters.

Rescuers are continuing to search for survivors with footage from the capital Mexico City showing volunteers joining the effort.

Among those killed, several students who were inside a grade school that collapsed, one of several buildings in the area reduced to rubble. This one also happened to fall on the 32nd anniversary of the devastating quake that killed thousands in the capital of Mexico City in 1985.

Mexico City's global airport suspended operations and was checking facilities for any damage. Mayor Mancera said, 50 to 60 people were rescued alive by fellow civilians and emergency workers in the capital.

"God bless the people of Mexico City".
