LaMotta is survived by his fiancé Denise Baker, her daughters Meggen Connolley and Natalia Baker; his daughters Jacklyn O'Neill, Christie LaMotta, Elisa LaMotta, and Mia Day; brothers Joe LaMotta and Al LaMotta; sisters Maria Hawfield and Anne Ramaglia.

Giacobbe "Jake" LaMotta was once World Middleweight Champion, and was nicknamed "The Raging Bull" for his aggressiveness and toughness.

LaMotta was born in 1922 to Italian parents in the Bronx area of NY and he took up boxing after the USA military rejected him on medical grounds. LaMotta knocked his opponent down in the first round of their first fight before proceeding to outpoint him over the course of 10 rounds during the second fight of their legendary six-bout rivalry. His nephew, John LaMotta - himself a former boxer - played "Duke", the owner of Duke's bar in Frasier. He eventually dropped the belt to Robinson in their first meeting before taking them back with a stunning win in the rematch.

"I'm no angel", he said in a 2005 interview with The Associated Press.

LaMotta released his autobiography, "Raging Bull: My Story" in 1970.

LaMotta held the world middleweight title twice in his career, which spanned from 1941 to 1954. After two more title defenses, LaMotta and Robinson met again on February 14, 1951. The title he won from Dauthuille he lost in his very first defense when he was stopped in the 13th round by Sugar Ray Robinson.

The International Boxing of Fame, who inducted LaMotta in 1990, revealed he began boxing at a young age when his father made him fight other neighborhood kids in The Bronx to entertain adults.

When LaMotta met Billy Fox on No. 14, 1947, LaMotta was knocked out in the fourth round and the New York State Athletic Commission withheld the purse believing the fight was fixed. "As I dug deeper, I realized a lot of it is different [from "Raging Bull"]".

He paid tribute to LeMotta shortly after hearing about his death. But it was the movie that unflinchingly portrayed him as a violent and abusive husband - he was married six times - that is remembered even more. By 19, LaMotta had honed his skills enough to go pro.
