37-year-old Carlos Muñoz Portal was found shot dead in his bullet-riddled vehicle.

A locations manager for the Netflix crime drama Narcos was found dead in his vehicle in rural Mexico on Monday. He was reportedly found riddled with bullets in his auto in a remote area near Hidalgo, which is known to have one of the highest murder rates in Mexico.

His death happened Monday (Sept. 11), but the news is just emerging now.

Authorities are having trouble finding witnesses, as PEOPLE has reported.

A friend of Muñoz says the film industry veteran drove out to photograph areas for season 4 scouting when he was last seen alive.

The network added that circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear.

Netflix said in a statement: "We are aware of the passing of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family". He was supposedly on his way to the State of Mexico to take pictures and scout additional locations for the show's upcoming fourth season, which will allegedly explore the origins of the infamous Juraez cartel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Munoz was an experienced location manager who had worked on numerous Hollywood productions in Mexico, including Tony Scott's Man on Fire, Mel Gibson's Apocalypto and the latest Bond film Spectre".
