Earlier on Friday, Kyrgios' team-mate John Millman threatened a shock when he took the first set off David Goffin, but the world number 12 responded to clinch a 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-3 7-5 win and give the hosts the lead.

Goffin came from a set down to beat Millman in a match that lasted over three- and-a-half hours.

The fiery Australian reiterated the prestigious competition remained his top priority after a disappointing grand slam season and used the post-match interview to take another swipe at his critics.

"I am not the professional tennis needs me to be", Kyrgios said.

"Throughout the match there are little momentum waves, he played some good points and hit some spots on serve".

"It's also the time where tennis expects me to be training, going to the gym and trying to improve the mental side of my game".

"When I'm in the right frame of mind, I feel unbeatable ... it all comes down to my motivation levels". "I felt a lot of nerves at the start and lost my way a bit but I managed to hang in", said the 33-year-old.

Kyrgios credited Australian team captain Lleyton Hewitt with fostering that team spirit, before claiming that the Davis Cup has helped rekindle his motivation for the sport.

"We know we need a miracle to win this tie but we believe in our team". "You can't get away from it", Fitzgerald said on the Channel 7 commentary.

'It would have been extremely hard to play five sets, ' Lajovic said.

The controversial Canberran stirred up the home fans by cupping his ear to them after taking the lead, a move that only seemed to inspire Darcis, who was playing in his 21st tie for his country.

Soeda had played his way back into the second rubber with the use of clever angles and lobs before a sudden meltdown in the fourth set opened the door for his opponent.

It allowed Kyrigios to see out the match to seal one of his best victories in an Australian shirt. Goffin has a terrific Davis Cup singles record of 17-3, and 7-2 on a clay court.

Tsonga, the world No. 18, is playing the Davis Cup for the first time in over year with his last appearance coming in the 2016 quarterfinal win over the Czech Republic.

Ruben Bemelmans and Arthur De Greef will play the doubles rubber for Belgium on Day 2.

The weekend's winners will face the victor of France and Serbia who play in nearby Lille.

The world No. 20 raised his level when it mattered most and overcame Steve Darcis 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2.

That's followed by French number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga crossing swords with Davis Cup debutant Laslo Djere, the highest-rated Serbian at No.80 in the world.
