Pep Guardiola's Manchester City got their Champions League campaign under way with a thumping 4-0 win over Dutch side Feyenoord in Rotterdam on Wednesday night.

After mauling 10-man Liverpool 5-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, City now travel to face the Dutch champions - who face a daunting prospect after a 15-year absence from the competition's group stage.

The result already puts City in a strong position in Group F ahead of successive home games against Shakhtar Donetsk and Napoli.

After an unsuccessful spell with Chelsea early in his career, De Bruyne returned to the Premier League with a point to prove in 2015, having excelled during his time spent playing in Germany's Bundesliga with Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg. The Brazilian has been training wearing protective headgear after suffering facial injuries in a nasty clash with Liverpool's Sadio Mane at the weekend.

If we want to make a step forward then we have to be important home and away, ' said Guardiola.

Guardiola said: "I spoke with him and he knows the reason why, but its between him and me". They are riding on a 12 matches unbeaten stretch dating back to last season and would love to add a win when they meet Feyenoord in Netherlands today.

City simply swept Feyenoord away in a spellbinding opening half-hour that must have delighted manager Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City nearly doubled their lead on seven minutes but Eric Botteghin headed Jesus's effort off his own line. Neat interplay involving Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva released Kyle Walker and his flawless first-time cross was brilliantly flicked past Jones by Aguero.

They could have got a lifeline on 21 minutes through Michiel Kramer, but Stones produced a crucial block to deflect his shot into the side netting.

City's third all but wrapped the game up.

Brad Jones parried Benjamin Mendy's shot, but the Feyenoord defence froze thinking Jesus was offside.

The fourth goal came soon after.

Stones had the visitors in front inside two minutes when he headed David Silva's cross from a short corner through the legs of Feyenoord midfielder Tonny Vilhena at the back post. Unused subs: Bijlow, Diks, Tapia, Geertruida.

Stones, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus scored in the first half as the visitors made a mockery of Van Bronckhorst's decision to play a five-man defense.
