Two Motel 6 Locations In Arizona Reportedly Alert ICE Of Undocumented Immigrants

The ACLU is publicly questioning Motel 6 after a Phoenix New Times report found that at least two of the motel chain's locations sent guest information to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Following the report, Motel 6 said in a statement on Wednesday evening: "This was implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management". It's certainly never luxurious, but if one has to find a cheap room off the side of a highway when you're 40 miles from nowhere in Nebraska, Motel 6 is going to offer a reasonably priced room that you're at least 70 percent sure didn't host a dead hooker the night before (and about 10 percent sure it didn't host a live one).

Pitts O'Keefe refused to say where ICE gets their leads on where undocumented immigrants are staying.

Yet this is not the first time a Motel 6 location has shared hotel guest information with the authorities.

In an astonishing new expose, the Phoenix New Times reported a suspicious number of arrests of undocumented immigrants at two Motel 6 locations in Maryvale, Arizona.

And personally, I'm with Phoenix-based attorney Robert McWhirter, who told the New Times: "I'll tell you one goddamned thing for sure-I'm not staying at a Motel 6 from now on". Keep in mind that as far as we know clerks have no reason to suspect these people of having committed any crime other than lacking standard American identification docs-they have no way of knowing about outstanding warrants or other possible crimes.

Law enforcement officials are barred by a 2015 Supreme Court ruling from forcing hotels to turn in guest information, which may suggest that the Motel 6 employees had volunteered to work with ICE agents.

"We send a report every morning to ICE-all the names of everybody that comes in".

"I imagine what went on here is they probably took a look at the names on the guest registry and compared that to a database of people that have been deported", said McWhirter.

Then, there's also the fact that a few Motel 6 employees corroborated the story. Both of the Motel 6 locations are corporate-owned and located in Latino neighborhoods. "When we became aware of it last week, it was discontinued".

'I wouldn't be able to confirm how we are getting our information.

In carrying out their immigration enforcement mission, ICE deportation officers make arrests nationwide every day as part of the agency's ongoing efforts to ensure domestic security, public safety, and the integrity of our nation's borders.

According to what immigration attorney Denise Aguilar told the New Times, the hotels could receive $200 for every undocumented immigrant arrested through the operation.
