Khan said following intelligence inputs about the presence of Abu Ismail in Aarigam (Nowgam) area on the outskirts of Srinagar, an operation was immediately launched.

Abu Ismail, the terrorist who masterminded and led the Amarnath yatra attack was killed in an encounter. Police had already arrested three local co-conspirators who had provided logistical support to the group of attackers on Amarnath Yatra bus.

A police officer when contacted confirmed the incident told GNS that Two militants were killed in the gunfight and their outfit and identity are being ascertained.

"Amarnath attack was a blot on "Kashmiryat" and today's operation was a result of prayers of every section of Kashmir society, which had strongly condemned the attack on the yatris", IGP said. Apart from Abu Ismail, Shabzar Bhar, Abu Jundal and other terrorists were encountered too.

Both were Pakistani nationals and two AK 47s and UBGLs were recovered from the encounter site.

The militant activities took a spike after Hizbul Mujahidin commander Burhan Wani was killed in July past year. He said militant leadership has to be eliminated because they also misguide our children and lure them into this.

As per preliminary reports, Abu Ismail, along with an accomplice was gunned down on Thursday afternoon. "He ( Abu Ismail ) was also trying to help and revive the nearly defunct Jaish-e-Muhammad in the Kashmir Valley, and himself participated in many attacks in South Kashmir", he said.

After killing of LeT militants, mobile internet service in Srinagar was suspended for some hours. Ismail was also involved in 15 other terror attacks in south Kashmir and bank robberies. Dujana was wanted in 40 serious attacks on security forces and carried a bounty of $23400. He took over after the killing of Abu Dujana.

"We are expecting a vacuum in the LeT leadership now, which should give us more opportunities".

"It was a very brief and crisp encounter", said Munir Khan, the Kashmir police chief.
