There's new information about the risks of drinking when pregnant

Baby and mother Women drinking four units of alcohol a week had an 8% higher risk of having a small baby compared to those who did not drink

Previous research shows up to 80pc of pregnant women in Ireland, the UK, New Zealand and Australia drink alcohol during pregnancy.

The researchers found very little evidence to make a definitive conclusion on how much women can safely drink during pregnancy.

The researchers stressed this does not mean alcohol is safe - and they recommended pregnant women abstain in case.

They trawled all available research on the effects of light drinking (up to four units of alcohol per week) in pregnancy.

The researchers conducted a systematic review and analysis of 5,000 studies published between 1950 and July 2016 based on low alcohol consumption and pregnancy.

However, the Department of Health and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said the safest course of action is still for women to avoid drinking in pregnancy. In 2016, a CDCP report stated fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) characterized by lifelong physical, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities are completely preventable if a woman does not drink alcohol while pregnant. Light drinking also appeared to have slightly increased the chances of a premature birth. However, the solid scientific evidence which should link light drinking to pregnancy complications is quite precarious.

It also highlights the failure of researchers so far to focus on "light" drinking versus no drinking, rather than just on moderate and heavy drinking.

But there was no evidence of other harms, including miscarriage, birth defects and developmental delay.

This evidence is not solid enough to banish drinking as completely unsafe during pregnancy, but women are still advised to avoid it just to be sure.

The most common alcohol-related questions that Horsager-Boehrer hears from pregnant patients involve concerns about a single drink they might have had before they knew they were pregnant or having a sip of champagne at a special event, she said.

Prof. David Spiegelhalter, from the University of Cambridge, said: "A precautionary approach is still reasonable, but with luck this should dispel any guilt and anxiety felt by women who have an occasional glass of wine while they are pregnant".

Since half of all pregnancies are unplanned, many women drink before the test shows positive.

It also found that drinking up to 32g a week while pregnant was linked to eight percent higher risk of having a smaller baby, as compared to no drinking at all. "It will be an important challenge for those responsible for public health messages to convey nuanced advice that explains how robust or otherwise the evidence is". The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that there is "no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy".

Despite research, experts are still unsure how much alcohol - if any - is safe to drink while pregnant.

Experts in Australia have warned pregnant woman against drinking, despite a United Kingdom study arriving at a different conclusion.
