Militants detonated an improvised explosive device and destroyed three armored vehicles.

It comes a day after the interior ministry said security forces had killed 10 suspected militants in a shootout during a raid on two apartments in Cairo.

At least 18 police forces, including a general, have been killed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula after militants ambushed their convoy, in one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in the restive region since January.

The assailants, whose identities were not yet known, later opened fire at survivors and commandeered a police pickup truck.

Directly after this attack, security forces launched intensive operations to arrest any IS members in Cairo and those who show affiliation to the group.

Egypt has been suffering from a spike in terrorist attacks targeting civilians in the mainland over the past year. That was followed by an exchange of gunfire with "terrorist elements" hiding in the desert on both sides of the road, according to the statement. Police said they killed 10 fighters in two simultaneous raids on apartments in a densely populated Cairo neighbourhood. During a firefight, wounding four employees of ambulance crews.

One of the security sources said authorities suspect the individuals to be members of Hasm, a group which has claimed several attacks around the Egyptian capital targeting judges and policemen since previous year.

The Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of a deadly militant insurgency since 2013, when Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first freely-elected president, was ousted and imprisoned in a bloody military coup.

Hundreds of police and army personnel have been killed since then.
