Obama's Syrian legacy: At least 2 dozen poison gas attacks on civilians

UN Officially Accuses Assad Government in Using Sarin in Khan Sheikhoun Syrian government behind sarin gas attack in April: UN probe

The UN report went on to note that Syrian government forces had continued with systematic use of chemical weapons against civilians in areas under opposition control. In the gravest incident, the Syrian air force used sarin in Khan Shaykhun, Idlib, killing dozens, the majority of whom were women and children.

The Khan Sheikhoun attack was just one of 33 chemical weapons attacks that it has documented.

The report, which also documents violations by al Qaeda's branch and other militant groups in Syria, said the commission is gravely concerned about the impact of coalition air strikes on civilians in Raqqa, where US -backed Syrian forces are battling the Islamic State.

That attack led U.S. President Donald Trump to launch the first U.S. air strikes on a Syrian air base.

The Syrian air force of President Bashar Assad was responsible for a sarin gas attack that killed at least 83 people, United Nations investigators said on Wednesday as they dismissed the regime's claims that their planes had been targeting a chemical weapons site. Perpetrators had not been identified yet in six early attacks, they said.

The attack killed at least 83 people, dozens of them women and children.

Speaking in Geneva, the chair of the commission Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, said most incidents which civilians are killed and maimed involve the unlawful use of conventional weapons, such as cluster munitions and explosive weapons in civilian populated areas.

An OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism has been given that task, but the UN human rights investigators say there are already "reasonable grounds" to believe that government forces attacked the town.

But following an attack on the Damascus suburb of Ghouta the following year, the United States struck a deal brokered by Russian Federation which saw the bulk of Syria's supplies of sarin removed from the country. While it's true that chlorine has multiple industrial uses, the same can not be said of Sarin gas used in several attacks over the last few years.

September 14, 2013: The United States and Russian Federation reach a deal to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons by the middle of 2014, averting punitive U.S. strikes against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Wednesday's report, the 14th by the commission since it was set up by the UN's Human Rights Council in 2011, is based on information retrieved from satellite images, video, photos, medical records, and over 300 interviews. It was among four chemical attacks the commission tallied over the span of its investigation - including the use of "weaponized chlorine" in three other locations.
