The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will support the Windows Mixed Reality headsets and this is a big thing since the Windows 10 will be one of the first to offer native support for AR/VR.

The software upgrade, its fourth update, will be offered from October 17 to existing customers of Windows 10 running on more than 500 million devices, the company said.

On the security side, the Fall Creators Update, Windows Defender will be smarter.

Microsoft hardware partners announced a whole range of new devices, and Microsoft choose to highlight some on the Windows blog.

OneDrive Files On-Demand brings back a new and improved version of the Placeholder feature that was introduced with Windows 8.1. Inputs will also change, with support for eye-tracking and the ability to more widely and more easily use digital pens.

Microsoft's focus on mixed reality as its terminology for the broad spectrum of devices and companion software is quite forward thinking, as UploadVR highlights, but it does mean we're left in the dark when it comes to specifics.

The Acer headset will be the cheapest, at $299, followed by the HP at $329, and Dell / Lenovo pricing theirs at $349. With the Fall Creators Update, we've updated Game Mode, which allows your games to use the full processing power of your device as if it was an Xbox game console, right from a new button on the Game bar.

The update also comes with some improvements to Windows Ink, allowing you to mark up PDF files in the Edge browser.

Microsoft plans to distribute the new version of Windows gradually over the course of four months.

The price tag of the upcoming headsets points out that manufacturers aim to compete with each other, but even more with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Windows users and administrators can enforce the upgrade to install it as early as possible, or wait until Windows Update selects the PC for the update.

Mixed reality has always been on Microsoft's radar, as earlier this year, it introduced Paint 3D. The Windows headsets also incorporate sensor technology that Microsoft developed for its HoloLens augmented-reality headsets. Are you willing to buy one?
