US Missile Defense Test Hits and a Miss

Chrystia Freeland: North Korea Missile Test 'Reckless' Violation Of Japan's Sovereignty North Korea missile threat: US diplomatic efforts failed, Fmr. Navy SEAL says

North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un promised more missile flights over Japan, insisting his nuclear-armed nation's provocative launch was a mere "curtain-raiser", even as the United Nations condemned North Korea's "outrageous" firing of a ballistic missile over Japan, demanding that the isolated country halt its weapons programme but holding back on any threat of new sanctions.

This Tuesday night photo provided by the Department of Defense shows a medium-range ballistic missile target as it launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. The missile travelled over the northern island of Hokkaido and landed in the sea.

"Threatening and destabilizing actions only increase the North Korean regime's isolation in the region and among all nations of the world", Trump said after the North's missile soared nearly 1,700 miles into the Pacific Ocean, triggering alert warnings in northern Japan and shudders throughout Northeast Asia.

This exercise marked the seventh intercept test of the Aegis Baseline 9.1 (BMD 5.0CU) Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) tracking and engagement capabilities and the third successful SM-6 BMD intercept test using Baseline 9.1.

In June, the John Paul Jones failed to shoot down its target missile in a similar test off Hawaii.

Gen. Sam Greaves said the Hawai'i test gives Navy ships enhanced capability to defeat ballistic missiles in their last stage of flight.

'We will continue developing ballistic missile defence technologies to stay ahead of the threat as it evolved'.

The U.S. has lost a few Aegis destroyers in recent months, hindering missile defense in a volatile region.

The agency's director said the test was "a key milestone". On Monday, Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile over Japan.

But yesterday's SM-6 test apparently wasn't a direct response to North Korea's most recent launch; the Hawaii operation had been planned for some time, according to The New York Times.
