Teheran warns IAEA against succumbing to USA inspection demand

'Strong indications' Trump won't recertify Iranian compliance with nuclear deal Iran warns against US 'intervention' in IAEA affairs

Iran has dismissed a top US diplomat's demand for the inspection of Iranian military sites by the United Nations nuclear watchdog, shrugging off comments by America's ambassador to the U.N.as only a "dream". A failure by the United States to re-certify Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal would mean the re-imposition of sanctions, a move that will only end up isolating the US internationally. Against the recommendations of his own national security advisers, President Trump said in interview with the Wall Street Journal last month that if it were up to him he would have declared Iran non-compliant at the start of his Administration and expects to declare them non-compliant at either the sanctions waiver in September or the compliance certification in October.

He added that such inspections - to be carried out by the International Atomic Agency (IAEA) at the request of U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley - would "not be allowed under any circumstance".

Under the nuclear agreement signed between Iran, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany and the European Union in July 2015, Tehran agreed to put limits on its nuclear activities in exchange for termination of financial and economic sanctions.

The IAEA is responsible for the verification of Iran's compliance with the agreement through regular access to all Iranian nuclear facilities.

"I see it as unlikely that the IAEA will accept the request for inspections, but even if they do, we will not".

"I have good confidence in the IAEA but they are dealing with a country that has a clear history of lying and pursuing covert nuclear programs, so we are encouraging the IAEA to use all the authorities they have and to pursue every angle possible with the JCPOA and we will continue to support the IAEA in that process".

When Trump last certified Iran, Bolton said it was a mistake.

The agency was charged with monitoring Tehran's compliance with restrictions on its nuclear activities mandated under the nuclear agreement in exchange for relief from global sanctions. "It's up to the professional inspectors at the International Atomic Energy Agency", said Matthew Bunn, a professor of practice at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government specializing in nuclear proliferation and control. On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly referred to that agreement as one of the worst deals ever negotiated, and in recent weeks he has indicated that he would have deemed Iran to be out of compliance at his earliest opportunity, thus precipitating the deal's cancellation, if not for the intervention of his foreign policy team.

This apparent pressure has led to numerous unfavorable comparisons to the politicization of intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction in the run-up to the USA invasion of Iraq. "In that regard, we should solicit suggestions for imposing new sanctions on Iran and other measures in response to its nuclear and ballistic-missile programs, sponsorship of terrorism, and generally belligerent behavior, including its meddling in Iraq and Syria". "In the context of what we are living through, the 2015 agreement is what allows us to establish a constructive and demanding dialogue with Iran".

The Iran nuclear deal, or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was an worldwide agreement hammered out over 20 arduous months of negotiations.
