Customer data stolen at games store Cex

CeX Brighton CEX suffers security breach that may affect up to two million customers
Sammy Stanley | 31 August, 2017, 01:13

CEX stopped storing customers credit card information in 2009, but the hackers may have obtained names, addresses, emails and phone numbers.

'One would struggle to think of a legitimate business reason for storing expired card details, ' he said.

According to a statement released by Cex, the information stolen appears to relate exclusively to the online store, with in-store data not appearing to be compromised.

Cex, a second hand goods chain based in the United Kingdom, has urged customers to change their passwords.

'As such, as a precautionary measure, we advise customers to change their password across other services where they may have re-used their WeBuy website password'.

The hack was carried out by an "unauthorized third party", and CEX is reportedly working with, "the relevant authorities, including the police".

Data breaches have affected a number of online retailers in the past and they could be subject to larger fines in the future once the EU's GDPR legislation comes into force in 2018.

Should CeX customers be bothered?

"Our cyber security specialists have already put in place additional advanced measures to fix the problem and prevent this from happening again", he said.

United Kingdom gaming chain CEX has apparently fallen victim to a large scale online data security data breach. "As we are now investigating this we are unable to provide further information at this stage".

This is on top of what CeX stresses was always a robust security system, which it says was continually updated.

As well as its hundreds of stores, the company also operates the webuy.com online marketplace. They're emailing all affected customers with guidance on how to proceed but recommend in the interim that anyone holding an online account with them changes their password; as an additional security measure, if you use the same password across multiple accounts we'd recommend changing your password across all affected accounts as well.
