As tens of thousands of anti-racism protesters descended on Boston to counter a Free Speech rally that many anxious would attract the same white supremacist, alt-right crowd seen in Charlottesville, Virginia, President Donald Trump again chose to respond to "both sides".

The arrests were largely for disorderly conduct including some for assault and battery. "Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!" But she's concerned about what she'll encounter, following a demonstration that turned deadly in Charlottesville, Virginia.

"I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate", he continued.

Trump adds in a Twitter message that "Our country will soon come together as one!"

Fears of another outbreak of violence after Charlottesville prompted the Boston Police Department to station more than 500 officers around the Common, erect barriers between the right-wing rally and the counter-protestors and install security cameras, according to the Post.

"We denounce the politics of supremacy and violence", it said.

A coalition of mostly left-leaning groups and activists such as the Black Lives Matter movement organized Boston's counterprotest.

Here are some of the most interesting signs they carried. "No KKK. No racist USA" and "Americans against hate".

Trump said at a Trump Tower press conference in New York, "You had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent".

A woman held up a sign about President Donald Trump.

The almost 500 police officers deployed for crowd control at the event were left dealing with counterprotesters when the participants of the "free speech" rally left the bandstand at the park, according to media reports.

By 1:30 p.m., the rally had ended, earlier than expected.

Organizers of a counterprotest to what's being called a free speech rally in Boston say they expect as many as 20,000 to 30,000 people to join them. "Demonstrators have left the Common".
