The president of Sierra Leone says his country needs "urgent support now" for thousands of people affected by flash flooding and mudslides in and around the capital Freetown. "Some even came nearly without clothes, because it (the flood) happened by night and they ran away", Biguzzi said.

In light of this national tragedy and the scale of the devastation to the lives of compatriots, I have chose to cut short my overseas trip and return immediately to Sierra Leone and support the collective response to this national tragedy. Other bodies were washed up on a beach.

According to Freetown Mayor, rescue workers have recovered 270 bodies so far mainly from the Regent neighbourhood where the mudslides happened.

Government spokesman Cornelius Deveaux told the AP that rescue operations began early Tuesday to remove people still believed to be buried in the rubble.

"We were asleep when we heard the noise of one of the walls falling down". This morning my children and I talked before I left for work. When he returned, his wife, children, siblings and in-laws were all dead.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari expressed condolence to Koroma in a phone call from London, saying the hearts of Nigerians are with the people of Sierra Leone in this tragic period, according to his spokesperson.

Some 2,000 have been left homeless as houses were swept away in Regent, in the outskirts of Freetown, while roads turned into rampaging rivers as the mudslide struck.

"The disaster is so serious that I myself feel broken", he added. "We are trying to separate, quantify and examine quickly, and then we will issue death certificates before the burial", Owiz Koroma, the morgue's director, told reporters.

Corpses were lying on the floor and on the ground outside for lack of room, witnesses said.

Sinneh Kamara, a coroner technician at the Connaught hospital, told local media that the number of those killed had overwhelmed the facility. Others were seen carting relatives' remains in rice sacks to the morgue.

Uhuru congratulated those helping in the rescue mission. The president's office released a statement urging residents to relocate to safer areas of Freetown. She managed to escape by climbing onto the roof.

"We have lost everything and we do not have a place to sleep". Freetown's drainage channels also are often clogged because of garbage dumping due to insufficient sanitation services in many areas.

Ms Stern said the mudslide in the mountain town of Regent was "huge in scale" and buried "everything in its path, destroying homes from five storey buildings to corrugated iron shacks".
