Guinness said Kristal was born in Poland on September 15, 1903, and survived the Auschwitz death camp, where his first wife, two children and other family members were killed by the Nazis.

After the war ended Kristal married another Holocaust survivor and moved with her to Israel in 1950 where he built a new family and opened his own successful confectionary business.

Mr Kristal hit the headlines previous year after deciding to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah a century late.

Kristal was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest man previous year, when he was 113.

Israeli media are reporting that the world's oldest man, who lived through both world wars and survived the Holocaust, has died a month short of his 114th birthday.

The original celebration had not taken place because World War One broke out.

He was born in 1903 to an Orthodox Jewish family near the town of Zarnow in Poland.

His two children died in the ghetto and his first wife was murdered in the Auschwitz gas chambers but Krista never gave up. He is survived by two of those children, and many more grandkids and great-grandchildren.

Oren Kristal said his grandfather gave no explanation as to the secret behind his incredible longevity. "All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost". He died in Haifa aged 113 years, 330 days, Reuters reported.

And the record holder for "longest living human" is Jeanne Calment, a French woman who died at age 122 and 164 days.
