Joyce also revealed Coutinho's request was made after he turned up to training at Melwood as usual this morning.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said the Reds were not "a selling club" when Barca's previous £72m offer was rejected in July.

"Liverpool is not a club that has to sell players".

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has submitted a transfer request, hours after the Premier League club released a statement saying he is not for sale.

"I think I've already said it a few times but maybe that's not 100 per cent clear". "And that is the way it will go".

But shortly afterwards, the Liverpool Echo reported that Coutinho had sent an email to Liverpool's sporting director Michael Edwards expressing his wish for a move. We also advised our followers not to dismiss the claims that Sky Sports News published today in relation to the transfer request (as we know who their source was).

The statement said: 'Philippe has tried very hard to find an amicable solution to this situation but to no avail.

"Liverpool is not a club that has to sell players".

Questioned on whether his job now was to keep Coutinho happy, Klopp added: "I can't keep players happy". That's how life is. For me the bigger issue is that he is unable to play.

"I have a dressing room that has more than just team-mates, they are friends, and the truth is that I am not thinking about a change".

Coutinho, who joined Liverpool from Inter Milan in 2013, hasn't publicly declared a desire to leave.

Earlier on Friday it was announced that Coutinho would miss the season opener against Watford with a back injury.

The 25-year-old was their leading scorer with 14 goals in all competitions last term, a season that saw Klopp's men secure a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
