Venezuela's Maduro wants 'personal conversation' with Trump

US oil refiners push back on potential economic sanctions against Venezuela Despite Venezuela's growing isolation, key allies hang on

The United States sanctioned President Nicolas Maduro and other Venezuelan politicians after the establishment of the Constituent Assembly.

"Is this the peace that Maduro is talking about?" said Gerardo Blyde, the mayor of Baruta, a nearby municipality who also has had an investigation opened against him.

In his remarks, the Venezuelan leader asked for a "personal conversation" with Trump when they gather in New York City next month at the United Nations General Assembly.

"If [Trump] is so interested in Venezuela, here I am", he said during his address to the assembly. "Mister Donald Trump، here is my hand،" he said.

They have invested heavily in the country's oil sector, and when the United States banned the sale and transfer of North American weapons and military technology to Venezuela in 2006, Caracas turned to Russian Federation and China instead.

But Maduro struck a defiant stance against what he called America's "imperialist aggression", accusing Washington of being involved in an attack on an army base last weekend by uniformed rebels led by two renegade Venezuelan officers.

These included: qualifying Maduro as a "dictator", rejecting the Constituent Assembly and refusing to acknowledge any legal action or bilateral agreement that does not come from the opposition-controlled National Assembly.

Arreaza delivered to each ambassador a formal protest against the meeting which issued a declaration outlining 16 measures to increase pressure against President Nicolas Maduro.

The UN Human Rights Council announced on Tuesday that the Venezuelan security forces have used excessive force to suppress street protests, killed dozens of people and arrested approximately 5.000 people since April.

Though the two countries are longtime allies, some in the Maduro opposition now say Russian Federation is exploiting Venezuela's problems to gain permanent leverage over the country.

The sanctions followed Friday's installation of a legislative superbody known as the constituent assembly, made up entirely of allies of the ruling Socialist Party and armed with the power to re-write the constitution.

The recent election of the 545-member assembly drew worldwide condemnation for usurping the authority of Venezuela's opposition-controlled congress.

Since late July, President Trump has slapped sanctions on 22 Venezuelan leaders, including Maduro.

New sanctions imposed on Venezuela are not constructive, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, hailing the creation of the Latin American's nation's constituent assembly as a basis for moving towards stability.
