2016 weather report: Extreme and anything but normal

NY Times forced to make embarrassing correction after false claim in Trump hit piece Climate change worse, faster than projected, scientists tell Trump in leaked report

The comprehensive report came days after The New York Times publicized a draft of a separate major climate change report that is awaiting Trump administration approval.

The story was published on Monday, and makes allegations against those who challenge scientific data on human-caused climate change.

President Trump has called climate change a "hoax" and his administration plans to soon host a public debate over the science supporting human-caused climate change.

Prior to that, was considered the warmest year of 2015.

Scientists did not prescribe solutions for the many catastrophes - typhoons, droughts, flooding, and other extreme weather events - that it mentions, nor does it weigh in on the fraught political environment the United States now faces regarding climate change. Oops. What the Times saw was a chance to exploit an obscure report to further its agenda of portraying Donald Trump as a Neanderthal who "could change or suppress the report" without the public's knowledge.

Even as the federal climate assessment has been under review, the warnings have grown starker.

"Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing humanity and life on Earth", said the peer-reviewed publication, put together by almost 500 scientists around the globe and released each year by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the American Meteorological Society. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, all drivers of atmospheric warming, recorded new highs previous year, with carbon dioxide surpassing a milestone 400 parts per million for the first time in recent history.

We ask that any comments by climate-change denialists be flagged for moderation. Authors of the subsection of that report, however, said they've seen no sign that might happen.

"I don't think the public is in the dark" about the scientific consensus on climate change, said Luke Popovich, vice president of the National Mining Association, which represents coal companies. The average surface temperature of the planet has risen about 1.1 degrees Celsius (2.0 degrees Fahrenheit) since the late 19th century, and the past 35 years have seen a majority of the warming, with 16 of the 17 warmest years on record occurring since 2001, according to NASA.

Less than a week from this announcement, his government's chief science agency released a report expressing the global warming was real and getting worse every day.

The odds of three years in a row setting heat records without man-made global warming is only 0.7 percent, compared to 30 to 50 percent with greenhouse gases according to a separate study published Thursday in the Geophysical Research Letters. Concentrations rose by 3.5 ppm in one year, the biggest spike observed since record-keeping began at Hawaii's Mauna Loa 58 years ago. "The rate of warming and the rate of sea level rise in the global oceans are both accelerating". The increase in the surface temperature of land and ocean in 2016 ranged from 0.45 to 0.56 degrees Celsius.

Americans are already experiencing more extreme precipitation. These glaciers have lost the equivalent of cutting a 70-foot thick slice off the top of the average glacier.
