Poultry farms in the United Kingdom provide the domestic demand for eggs by 85%, and infection fipronil not revealed.

Twenty tonnes of fipronil-contaminated eggs have been sold in Denmark, the country's Veterinary and Food Administration said on Thursday.

In Romania - the country identified in media reports as where Belgium's Poultry-Vision bought its supply of fipronil - one tonne of egg yolk liquid contaminated with the insecticide was found.

The chemical can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands.

"Samples analysed in the Netherlands show traces of fipronil in the eggs, but not as a health hazard", the agency said [in Danish].

It emerged today that this was a false assurance and that potentially contaminated products were still being... 'Destroyed'The NVWA spokeswoman said that restrictions remained in place on 138 farms producing eggs in the Netherlands.

Tests conducted in the Netherlands suggested that although the eggs were tainted with fipronil, the levels were not considered a health hazard.

This is a joint action from the Dutch and Belgian authorities, a spokesperson for the Dutch Public Prosecutor said to the Telegraaf, though she would not say exactly where the raids are done.

More than 180 Dutch chicken farms were closed amid follow-up examinations. "Legislation forbids the use of fipronil on poultry".

A statement from the FSA said: "Investigations into the Fipronil incident in Europe continue".

Chickfriend is yet to comment. She said a criminal investigation had begun, although she understood that the company involved in the investigation was no longer operational. On the 24th of July, administrative documents have been seized from a person suspected of being the dealer of the product in the region of Uden, in the south-east of the netherlands.

It means around 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms implicated in the contamination scare were distributed to Britain.

A spokesperson from Asda said: "Customers should be reassured by the FSA's explanation that this decision is not due to food safety concerns and there is unlikely to be any risk to public health from consuming any of these three products".

On Monday the European commission said British food safety authorities were alerted over the weekend that eggs imported from Germany could be risky.

The Netherlands is Europe's biggest egg producer - and one of the largest exporters of eggs and egg products in the world.

Discount supermarket chain Aldi had withdrawn suspect batches sold in Luxembourg but "contaminated eggs were sold on the Luxembourg market", the government announced.

It is thought that fipronil was added to an allowable treatment for red mites.
