In case you haven't heard, it's not safe to look directly at the sun.

"They damage the cells in your eyes, they damage your retinas, and the damage can be permanent".

But as demand for these glasses has skyrocketed, scams have entered the market.

The American Astronomical Society has a list of reputable manufacturers and authorized dealers at this site.

NASA recommends using special-purpose solar filters such as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers for those who want to see the eclipse. The closest place to view the totality for most Hoosiers is near Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

These solar viewer brands are said to be available at retail chains such as 7-Eleven, Best Buy, Kroger, Love's Travel Stops, Lowe's, Flying Js, Toys "R" Us and Walmart carry the approved brands.

"If we don't list a supplier, that doesn't mean their products are unsafe", AAS spokesperson and task force member Rick Fienberg said in the release.

Looking at the sun during an eclipse is still damaging to our eyes, and you'll need more than a pair of sunglasses to view the eclipse safely. Operators will also use new technologies to control demand when the moon will completely block the sun along a 70-mile-wide corridor stretching from OR to SC. The space agency also discouraged use of homemade filters. Ordinary sunglasses are not a replacement for eclipse-viewing glasses and should not be used.

"Even very dark ones are not safe for looking directly at the sun; they transmit many thousands of times too much sunlight", AAS says. You can pick up free solar eclipse viewing glasses at the Newell Public Library during regular hours anytime between now and the eclipse. A shade number of 13 is ideal, AAS says, but those are hard to come by.

There will be a total solar eclipse on Monday 21 August, where there will be sights of totality where the moon blocks out the sun entirely.

21 eclipse, operators of giant solar fields from California to the Carolinas will rely on power from fast-start natural gas generators as well as hydroelectric plants and other sources to fill the gaps as the sky darkens.

IN isn't in the path of totality, but southern parts of the state will have near-totality: 99 percent in Evansville, 96 percent in Jeffersonville, 95 percent in Bloomington and about 90 percent in Indianapolis.

Millions of Americans will be staring up at the sky later this month when a rare total solar eclipse will be visible in certain parts of the country.
