Patriots become first NFL team to have own planes New England Patriots become first NFL team to own customized planes (report)

They earned another by becoming the first National Football League team to purchase their own airplane for team travel. The outside of the plane is coated in team colors and logos and, of course, the five Lombardi trophies.

The Patriots are ahead of the rest of the National Football League in a lot of ways, now they have one more - with their own fleet of jumbo jets.

New England has gone ahead and purchased literal jets, as reported by Darren Rovell of ESPN.com, becoming the first National Football League franchise to own an airplane for team travel.

Sources tell ESPN that the reigning Super Bowl champions bought two 767 Boeing widebody jets in the offseason, retrofitted the planes with all first class seats, some which recline completely.

These planes are reportedly long-range, meaning they can fly for 12 hours straight, and the cost is estimated between $5 million and $65 million. Charter costs, meanwhile, are expected to balloon to approximately $4 million for the 10 round trips-including preseason games-required per season.

Rovell noted that one plane will primarily be used as the main mode of transportation for road games, while the other plane will be kept as a backup.

The Patriots will allow for the planes to be rented when they are not in use by the team. "It is not known how aggressively the team will seek to make up some of its costs by advertising the planes' availability".
