"It helps a lot when you're out there", said Ali. I felt good rhythm after the first game. "I contributed with the bat a couple of times", Ali told BBC Radio's Test Match Special.

South Africa-born Jennings came into this innings under huge pressure for his place after averaging a mere 16.40 in Test cricket since a hundred on debut against India at Mumbai in December. Amla had been intent on little more than survival at the outset of his innings, needing 18 deliveries to get off the mark, but he set about loosening the shackles as the hardness went out of the new ball and the spite in the wicket was tamed.

England captain Joe Root was pleased with how his side overcame challenges as they wrapped up a 3-1 series win over South Africa.

England vs South Africa Live Score 4th Test Day 3: South Africa 220 for 9 - The Proteas will resume at 220 for 9 and 142 runs behind England on day three.

Ali removed Quinton de Kock and Theunis de Bruyn in the space of three balls in his next over, and sealed victory by claiming the final two wickets of the test in successive balls.

That's exactly what happened to Moeen Ali, who smashed a six for England against South Africa to reach his half century, and guided the ball into the hands of Jonny Bairstow in the process.

Moeen Ali was named Man of the Series after taking 25 wickets with his off-spin - including a hat-trick to win the third Test at The Oval and 5-69 as England triumphed in the fourth at Old Trafford - as well as scoring 252 runs, with fifties at Lord's and in Manchester.

Jennings has failed to pass 50 in eight innings against South Africa this summer and was in poor form for Durham before the series.

The off-spinner bagged a five-wicket haul in the second innings as hosts England while defending 380 runs bundled out Proteas for 202 to win the match by 177 runs.

The crucial breakthrough came when Moeen switched to the James Anderson End after being negated by Amla's reverse tactics, and tweaked a sharp offbreak into Amla's pads.

Temba Bavuma again battled hard until, from the last ball before lunch, he was given out caught behind on review off Toby Roland-Jones.

He then twice forced Stokes off the back foot for two stylish offside fours before driving Moeen for six.

Moeen began to take the attack to South Africa after Bairstow's departure and dominated the 58-run stand he put together with Roland-Jones.

Alastair Cook, at slip, took a simple catch to dismiss him for 11 as Kuhn got an outside edge.

Although Jennings scored a century on his debut against India late previous year, he has failed to reach fifty in eight attempts against South Africa.
