Contaminated eggs have been distributed in UK

Aldi stores in Germany stop selling eggs amid Dutch food safety scare Europe insecticide egg crisis not yet spread to France

A number of supermarket chains including Germany's REWE and Penny have taken Dutch eggs off their shelves.

Millions of eggs were recalled from shops and warehouses in Germany and the Netherlands, and blocked from sale in Belgium last week after some were found to contain high levels of fipronil, a toxic insecticide banned from use in the production of food for human consumption.

Belgium has been aware of a potential problem with fipronil in the poultry sector since June, its food safety agency admitted, adding that it did not say anything because of a fraud investigation.

In the dark and silent shed of a small Dutch poultry farm, 1.8 million eggs closely packed together wait to be destroyed.

Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a European Commission spokeswoman, said, "We do not know if the eggs are contaminated or not, but because of these notifications, it's now up to the national authorities to check".

Eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil were distributed in the United Kingdom after all, it has emerged - despite government assurances last week that the United Kingdom was not affected by the egg contamination scandal that is now rocking Europe.

"The number of eggs involved represents about 0.0001% of the eggs imported into the United Kingdom each year", it said.

Very large quantities can cause damage to the kidneys, liver and lymph glands.

After Belgium failed to notify the European Union executive immediately on an ongoing investigation to a Belgian company for creating an illegal mite-killer containing fipronil, delayed to break the news to the Berlaymont.

About 180 poultry farms in the Netherlands have also been temporarily shut in recent days while investigations are held.

The FSA says it is urgently investigating and indications so far are that the eggs are no longer on sale.

Fipronil is an insecticide used to combat insects such as fleas, lice, ticks, cockroaches and mites.

Germany will protest to Brussels today after Belgian food safety authorities failed to warn neighbouring countries that eggs had been contaminated with a potentially poisonous insecticide.
