Tillerson takes North Korea pressure campaign to Asia

The obstacle came one day after the U.N. Security Council on Saturday unanimously approved new sanctions against North Korea in the wake of the communist nation's first successful tests of ICBMs capable of reaching the US mainland.

The US is also pushing for tougher steps in its latest UN Security Council resolution, which could be voted on as soon as Saturday.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted out praise for China approving the measure.

Wang said the two had an intensive conversation during which China urged North Korea to maintain calm.

It condemns the launches "in the strongest terms" and reiterates previous calls for North Korea to suspend all ballistic missile launches and abandon its nuclear weapons and nuclear program "in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner".

"New Zealand joins the global community in calling on North Korea to see in these statements an alternative path".

The US and China can have a productive relationship if the two countries can work together on the issue of North Korea. "We're working this one hard, and a lot of other countries care about it just as much as we do".

The Security Council unanimously approved the sanctions on North Korea, including banning coal and other exports worth over $1 billion.

China's foreign minister said sanctions against North Korea aren't his country's end goal. The resolution also imposes new restrictions on North Korea's Foreign Trade Bank and bans the country from increasing the number of workers it sends overseas.

"I have previously strongly condemned North Korea's illegal and unsafe missile tests, which are a threat to regional stability", Mr Brownlee says.

But Liu also criticized the USA, calling for dismantlement of a missile defense system it has begun installing in South Korea, which China also regards as counterproductive. Estimates of North Korean workers overseas range from 50,000 to 200,000, with their labor earning the the government as much as $2 billion to $3 billion a year.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in Manila for talks with regional counterparts, called it "a good outcome". The U.S. could do more on its own to develop a relationship with North Korea, she said. When Tillerson announced it at the United Nations in April, he asked countries to fully implement United Nations sanctions against North Korea, suspend or downgrade diplomatic relations with the country, and increase it's financial isolation. The State Department said it needed to ensure Sudan is making enough progress on counterterrorism and humanitarian access and that it wanted to check "that Sudan is committed to the full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea".
