That was the biggest chance for Arsenal in the half while Chelsea's Pedro also tried his hand from the left but his powerful left footed shot was blocked by Petr Cech.

"It was just a question on the bench of whether we could come back or not".

But Pedro got himself sent off for a nasty challenge on Mohamed Elneny 10 minutes before the end of the match.

Five other Nigerian players, past and present, who have won the FA Community Shield include Daniel Amokachi in 1995 with Everton, Nwankwo Kanu with Arsenal in 1999 and Celestine Babayaro who won it in 2000 with Chelsea.

Courtois was called into action again, saving excellently at full stretch to deny a fierce long-range effort from Granit Xhaka. And things got worse for the Blues a minute later.

The sides couldn't be separated at full-time so the 2017 Community Shield was decided on penalties.

The match went to penalties, which were conducted in the new "ABBA" format that saw Chelsea go first, with Arsenal then taking the next two, and Chelsea the two after that.

As for Pedro's red card, Conte said: "It was a tough decision, I didn't see the replay but it is the second time that we finished with one man down against Arsenal". Team A then get two successive penalties, a little like the tie-break in tennis, and so on until there is a victor.

That gave Arsenal the initiative and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored before Olivier Giroud netted the decisive penalty. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and the new mega signing Alvaro Morata failed to convert their penalties while Arsenal players were spot on with their kicks.

Arsenal kick-off the Premier League season at home to Leicester on Friday, before Chelsea travel to Burnley a day later.

"We had a tough pre-season and, in the six days between now until we start the league, we have to be focused on the next game", said the former Juventus and Italy coach.
