"We are closely following the terrorism investigation in Australia and assisting our partners", DHS said in a statement.

Four men were arrested in raids across the city on Saturday.

"There have been reports the device was a domestic meat mincer which would have been filled with explosives and detonated on board".

Four men have been detained following raids across Sydney, on suspicion of plotting an "elaborate" attack.

"We've taken this threat very seriously", AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin said.

Dutton, the border protection minister, urged travelers to arrive at Australian airports two hours before domestic flights and three hours before worldwide flights to allow time for more screening.

According to local media, they include a father and son and another pair who are also related. On Sunday, a magistrate gave permission for an additional period of detention, meaning the four can be held for up to seven days without charge.

"We do believe it is Islamic-inspired terrorism", he said.

Counter-terrorism police have conducted several recent raids, heightening tensions in a country that has had very few domestic attacks.

"This is about prevention, it is fair to say, you have no choice but to jump in. we'll be taking action when we don't have all the pieces of the puzzle to put together".

The foiled Australian terrorist plot targeting an airline, believed to be inspired by ISIS, has gotten the attention of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Australia's national terror threat level remains at "probable" - the third level on a scale of five.

The Foreign Office has updated its advice to say: "Following the arrest of four men in Sydney in a counter-terrorism operation on 29 July, there are enhanced security measures in place at all major Australian domestic and worldwide airports".

What is the impact on travel?

Qantas and Virgin issued travel alerts to passengers to arrive at the airport two hours before domestic flights and three hours before worldwide flights and to "limit the amount of carry-on and checked baggage". He said the public needed to go about their business and give themselves more time at the airport. "Some of the measures will be obvious to the public, some will not be", Turnbull said.

The plotters were apparently making a peroxide-based explosive device rather than using nitrate-based chemicals that can be detected by airport security swab tests, Barton said.
