It can offer a maximum download speed of 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps) as compared to its predecessor Cat.16 LTE modem, which offers 1 gigabit (Gb) downlink speed across the network.

Today, Samsung chose to set another record with a new Cat.18 LTE modem that offers 6CA with the ability to achieve download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps!

Samsung is doing its part in producing new modems inside its chipsets, but carriers also need to support increased bandwidths in order to achieve these theoretical speeds. The new technology is rated to offer peak downlink speed of up to 1.2Gbps.

Hypothetically, the updated modem will allow phones to download an entire HD movie within 10 seconds. However, with the new technology coming into the market, carriers will possibly tighten their belts and start testing 6CA speeds to bring them into the market soon.

The company which revealed that it will be investing over $18bn to expand its memory chip and smartphone business over the next four years, have begun working closely with telecommunication measuring instrument provider Anritsu, to enable its Cat.18 6CA technology to deliver advanced speeds. It will also, hypothetically, eliminate buffering during video calls and live-stream broadcasts. The Cat.18 6CA supported 4×4 MIMO, 256 QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) and enhanced Licensed Assisted Acess (eLAA). US users got the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. As The Verge highlights, carriers are still somewhat behind the times as Sprint only earlier this year added support for three-carrier aggregation.

It is expected to go into mass production by the end of this year.
