The game will also be getting its first three cosmetic crates along with the monthly update, which are purchasable using the in-game BP currency. This is the Gamescom Invitational Crate, which will contain the largest assortment of clothing and accessories for players.

Adding paid cosmetics was always part of the plan for Battlegrounds, but some players are angry that developer Bluehole has done so while the game is still in Steam Early Access. Many are also inspired by the movie Battle Royale, without which PUBG, the most popular game in the burgeoning battle royale genre, would not exist.

The first major eSports tournament for the still unfinished "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" will be held next month at Gamescom.

The game is still unfinished, with the PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds final release date pushed back to the end of the year.

Bluehole Games has been hard at work in releasing updates to the game, and on August 3, the highly requested first-person only mode will arrive for hardcore players looking for a tougher challenge.

Dissent went into overdrive when Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene chimed in on the game's official Discord to say that all crates released after Early Access will require keys that cost money.

"We have implemented a very basic key and crate system for this test".

Even those who don't attend can contribute to the tournament, with developer Bluehole Inc. adding new vanity items to the game on 3 August for regular players to purchase. The Invitational will include Solo mode, Duo mode, Duo first-person mode and Squad mod, and will span four days.

Speaking of that tournament: It'll be at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany from August 23-26, and broadcast live each day. Earlier today we reported that the game was getting new cosmetic items via crates, one of which is the limited time Gamescom Invitational Crate, costing $2.50 United States dollars to open and containing exclusive items, with the money going towards charity, and funding the upcoming Gamescom PUBGInvitational, as well as its prize money. These will not be free, and instead can only be opened with a key that must be purchased for $2.50. At present, the Twitch Prime set for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is routinely selling for over $20, with some listings going for nearly $30 - a decent profit, given that the items were being offered up for free.
