Anne Hathaway in Talks to Replace Amy Schumer in 'Barbie' Movie

Anne Hathaway Top Choice To Play “Barbie” Sony Wants Anne Hathaway For 'Barbie' Live-Action Film

However, THR now reports that the project is not only back up and running, it's got Anne Hathaway set to take over from Schumer and all. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Hathaway is now in negotiations to play Barbie, with the deal dependent on whether Hathaway's schedule is amenable to Sony sticking to their planned June 29, 2018 release date.

The actress left the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Though Hathaway is well known for her dramatic roles, she's no stranger to comedy, having starred in films like The Princess Diaries and Bride Wars in the past.

Mattel president and COO, Richard Dickson, who has worked to modernise the brand during the past two years, will serve as executive producer. The main character gets kicked out from Barbieland for not being ideal and will go on an adventure in the outside world. (And since Schumer was their original choice, we know it'll include a ton of laughs.) The film is also said to have a feminist spin, which we can't wait for.

In fact, it was Hathaway who was behind the selection of Alethea Jones as the director; Jones, an Australian director who most recently helmed Fun Mom Dinner, is still in talks to join.

The studio is still eyeing a June 29, 2018, release, but one issue that is keeping things in flux is Hathaway's schedule.

Will Anne Hathaway be our new Barbie girl in a Barbie world? Now in line to direct the film is Alethea Jones, with Hilary Winston said to be writing the script. She is about to start shooting the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" remake "Nasty Women" with Rebel Wilson and is co-starring in the "Ocean's Eleven" spin-off "Ocean's Eight".
