The release of the Android O is fast approaching, but until Google decides to out the final version of the platform, those lucky to own a compatible Nexus or Pixel device will be able to install a new Developer Preview build.

In addition to helping Google vet its OS, betas like this give enthusiastic users a sneak peek of what to expect in the next major release.

Android O has been floating around for a while in the form of developer previews.

Like the previous betas, a Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player or Pixel handset is required to test the beta.

The public release of Android O is slated to happen in Q3 2017.

Since little is expected to change between Developer Preview 4 and the full release of Android O, developers can also use this build to test their app and ensure everything is functioning properly. Google will release small updates to the SDK, tools, and Android Emulator system images over the next few days. The image files include a stable version of the Android 26.0.0 Support Library, while an updated version of the Android Testing Support Library will be provided very soon according to Google. A new version of the Android Testing Support Library is also available today with included support for features like Android Test Orchestrator, Multiprocess Espresso, and more. We still don't have an official codename for Android 8.0, but that's not stopping the company from introducing a new Easter egg to this new dev preview.
