IBM unveils powerful new encryption mainframe

"Of the more than nine billion data records lost or stolen since 2013, only four percent were encrypted, making the vast majority of such data vulnerable to organised cyber crime rings, state actors and employees misusing access to sensitive information". And there's pricing model for payment systems, which is based on the volume of payments not capacity.

At the same time, IBM announced that later this year it will make a significant change to its mainframe licensing model that is meant to encourage IT organizations to deploy emerging microservices on a mainframe.

The IBM Z (pictured, with IBM distinguished engineer Karl Casserly, left, and hardware engineer Rhonda Sundlof) features what the company calls "pervasive encryption", providing the ability to encrypt all data in an application, database or cloud service.

"The pervasive encryption that is built into, and is created to extend beyond, the new IBM Z really makes this the first system with an all-encompassing solution to the security threats and breaches we've been witnessing in the past 24 months", said Peter Rutten, analyst at IDC's servers and compute platforms group. This bulk encryption would not be feasible if not for a ginormous seven-fold increase in cryptographic performance over the previous generation IBM z13, which IBM says is driven by a 4x increase in silicon dedicated to cryptographic algorithms. As Mauri said, even if hackers could somehow get through all of these defenses, the encryption would render the data useless. This is a massively powerful mainframe featuring the industry's fastest microprocessor clocked at 5.2GHz and a new scalable system architecture that delivers up a 35 percent capacity increase for both traditional workloads and Linux workloads, compared to the z13. -Tamper-responding encryption keys: A concern for organizations is protection of encryption keys-an extreme version of the problem faced by millions of consumers with increasing complexity and vulnerability of passcodes. It does this without any software changes or disruption to business applications and operations. To that end, IBM has already built six IBM Cloud Blockchain data centers, with more coming, says Mauri. The centres are to be built in Dallas, London, Frankfurt, Sao Paolo, Tokyo and Toronto, with more planned.

IBM Z integrates with IBM Blockchain services, and it offers automated compliance and security as well.

The pervasive encryption technology may hold additional appeal for companies because of new data governance regulations due to hit next May in the European Union. IBM Z will also go onto the IBM Cloud, launching initially as an encryption engine for cloud services and to run IBM Blockchain services, with the aim of providing the highest commercially available levels of cryptographic hardware.

New applications for the deployment of new microservices and applications that enable clients to maximize the value from on-premises enterprise systems securely and in real time.

Despite all the hype surrounding the demise of the mainframe, most large IT organizations are still completely dependent on a venerable platform that is now over 50 years of age. It's a matter of whether or not IBM is the one that will secure the business and what its share will be.

"It's a security breakthrough that now makes it possible to protect all the data, all the time", he said.

IBM is now there to provide that at the right place and the right time. IBM's technology involves several advances, the company said.
