Again, it's more about testing their propulsion and braking system in the vacuum environment created by the hyperloop tube, it's hard to make it exciting.

In an appearance this morning on CBS News, co-founder Shervin Pishevar called the test run its "Kitty Hawk moment" - comparing it to when the Wright Brothers first took flight in 1903.

Hyperloop One, which is based on an idea originally conceived by Elon Musk, is now conducting feasibility tests throughout Europe, including the UK.

The high-speed tube transportation company, which aims to one day whisk people between cities at airline-like speeds, says it made history recently with a successful test run at its Nevada development track in May. At the time, the company commented that the "sled" which performed the test would be replaced with 28-passenger pods that could be moved at great speeds through a vacuum tube.

Elon Musk's dream of a shuttling passengers back and forth between Los Angeles and San Francisco at rapid speeds is starting to become a reality. Since the May test, Hyperloop has built out 10 times as much motor, it says, bringing propulsion capabilities to about 1,000 feet of track.

Hyperloop One conducted the first full-scale system test (via The Verge), achieving full vacuum conditions in its closed tube environment with a test pod that's the actual size of what it envisions for its production systems.

And Hyperloop One does seem to be making some solid progress.

The startup said the privately conducted full systems test happened on May 12, 2017, and a spokesperson for the company told Ars that test results are being reported now because Hyperloop One is ending Phase 1 of testing and entering Phase 2, where the prototype vehicle will be pushed to 250 miles per hour.

"For the first time in over 100 years, a new mode of transportation has been introduced", said Pishevar. You definitely shouldn't expect to see one of these high-speed tubes in the US anytime soon. "Hyperloop is real, and it's here now".

If the team over at Hyperloop One can follow on from this short test with speeds more like that which will be required in the finalized version, then maybe we will actually see the system go into commercial use. And, of course, convincing skeptical transportation planners that this is a better solution than tried-and-true high-speed rail.

Hyperloop One is also looking at possible locations to build a full-scale system.
