Two Democratic congressmen have brought articles of impeachment against President Trump for obstruction of justice as his family is engulfed in the Russian election meddling scandal.

A California Democrat has followed through on threats to file impeachment articles against President Trump, but there remains little indication that the effort will progress in the near future. Sherman's impeachment article states that Trump should be impeached due to "high crimes and misdemeanors".

Rep. Brad Sherman, from the Los Angeles area, introduced his measure on "high crimes and misdemeanors" Wednesday after the release of explosive emails to Donald Trump Jr. about a Russian government effort to help his father win a year ago.

"This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump", an intermediary working to set up the meeting wrote in an email.

At present, only one other member of Congress - Democratic Rep. Al Green - has endorsed Sherman's article.

Sherman cites Trump's admission on national television that he fired the FBI director over the Russia investigation, and Trump's reported comment to a Russian delegation at the White House the day following the firing that he felt relieved.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Sherman mentioned the recent news of Donald Trump Jr. and his email exchange regarding a meeting with a Russian attorney who claimed to have incriminating information about Hillary Clinton.

Both chambers of Congress as well as a special prosecutor appointed by the Department of Justice are investigating Russian meddling in the US presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign. In his statement, Sherman described Trump as "America's amateur president", who demonstrates "ignorance accompanied by a refusal to learn".

Sherman said more Articles of Impeachment may emerge as evidence comes from separate investigations, but they believe there is sufficient evidence for obstruction to move forward.

A majority of the House of Representatives is necessary for impeachment, with two-thirds of the Senate necessary for removal.
