We've always said that our goal for now is driving VR into as many hands as possible, and then in the long run we intend to monetize that as an ecosystem, as opposed to a pure hardware play.

When Oculus announced the Rift would launch at $599-or $799 with the motion-tracked Touch controllers-the Internet-at-large rioted.

Price - one of the biggest hurdles to widespread adoption of high-end virtual reality devices - just got a temporary cheat code for anyone considering the Oculus Rift. In other words, the Rift is now on par with Sony's PlayStation VR in terms of pricing and significantly undercuts the HTC Vive.

Everything is relative when you're talking about the cost of virtual reality headsets, but a £200 price slash is pretty major by any measure.

Starting Monday, the price of Oculus Rift and the Oculus Touch controllers will be reduced, for a limited time, to $399 at all stores (Best Buy, Amazon, and all others where it's available). Still that move didn't have the desired effect which prompted Oculus in May to shutter its virtual reality content production unit Story Studio and instead go with third party content.

Why the sudden price cut?

The video spread through Facebook thanks to a good friend DJ Mosaken, whose original post got nearly 53 million views.

If there's a magical price for selling game consoles, it's somewhere south of $400.

The pace of game releases has quickened, making a wider appeal possible, Rubin said: "We're now in a space where the mass market can be much happier".

A signal for new hardware?

On the plus side, it's now cheaper than ever to upgrade your gaming PC to a VR rig, with estimates putting the whole deal at around $1000, rather than $1500 that was originally required just six months ago. Those price cuts were made as the Rift reached its first birthday.

Facebook kicked off the tech industry's push into VR with its purchase of Oculus for $2 billion in 2014.
