However, Porte's BMC sporting director Fabio Baldato insisted the team had come prepared, particularly for the Mont du Chat climb and descent.

'He was conscious, it's reassuring, he is being transferred to the hospital, ' race doctor Florence Pommery said.

Three-times podium finisher Nairo Quintana of Colombia also struggled, losing 1:15 to Froome and his group.

"I'm just thinking of the devastation of leaving the Tour and another Grand Tour", Thomas told the team's website.

Later it was revealed that the Australian had suffered a concussion as well as a number cuts and bruises.

Barguil, with Fuglsang the last survivor of the day's break, initially appeared to have been awarded the win until the photo finish made clear that Uran had just pipped him to the line.

He also went down in the second, fourth and eighth stages.

The damage from a brutal stage took its toll: Porte and Thomas were just two of around 20 riders who crashed on the wet, narrow roads of the Jura.

When the dust settled, Froome's lead in yellow increased from 12 seconds to 18 - now over Astana's Aru rather than his Sky team-mate Thomas - after he finished third in a six-man sprint to take the final bonus seconds.

If Quintana - 2:13 down in eighth place - kept his faint hopes of a first Tour crown alive, then the same can not be said of Contador: the former double Tour champion is now more than five minutes down on Froome in the GC. He is now sixth overall, 1:44 behind Froome.

Briton Geraint Thomas, who started the day second overall, had already crashed out 100 kilometers from the finish when Porte, who was fifth, slipped off the tarmac and onto a grass verge on the inside of a rapid descent.

Monday is a rest day for the riders.
