United States plans to test THAAD missile defenses

Missile Defense MEA tells North Korea: Missile programme impacting Indian national security, refrain from such actions

The radar first detects an incoming missile, those manning the system identify the threat then a launcher mounted to a truck fires a projectile, which Lockheed Martin calls an "interceptor", at the ballistic missile in the hopes of destroying it using kinetic energy.

Tensions between North Korea and the USA are reaching boiling point as Kim successfully launched an intercontinental missile on July 4.

The exact date of the planned test is not being disclosed until it has taken place.

US Missile Defense Agency confirmed that it aimed to carry out a Thaad flight test "in early July". North Korea's ICBM has a theoretical range to Alaska, based on estimates from the test.

The show of force came as the United States plans to carry out a new test of its Thaad missile defence system against an intermediate-range ballistic missile in the coming days.

It is the first operational test of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) to defend against a simulated attack, USA officials told Reuters news agency.

Vice Admiral James Syring, a former director of the Missile Defense Agency, said in May the THAAD system has a 100% success rate in its 13 flight tests so far. In a recent Congress testimony, the former director of the MDA, Vice Admiral James Syring, stated that FTT-18 was meant to show the THAAD missile defense systems ability to target and hit a IRBM target that is separating. While the North Koreans may have the technology to send a missile to Alaska, with THAAD, it appears doubtful that it would hit its target.

Both Russia and China have opposed deployment of THAAD in South Korea.

The US has THAAD missiles in Guam to guard against a missile attack from North Korea.

US THAAD batteries are also installed in Guam and Hawaii, created to stop an intermediate-range missile from North Korea. They view North Korea as a clear and present danger and defenses must be made available to protect the region.
