UNESCO Declares Hebron's Old City a Palestinian World Heritage Site

EU wants Israel to 'reconsider' East Jerusalem building Israel Has No Sovereignty over Jerusalem: UNESCO

"This irrelevant organisation promotes FAKE HISTORY". Six countries abstained from the controversial vote which, at the request of Poland, Croatia, and Jamaica, was a secret ballot; a first for such a vote.

This will intensify the global spotlight on Hebron, a city with over 220,000 Palestinians, which is already one of the most contentious hotspots in the West Bank.

The move has been met with applause by Palestinians, and condemnation from Israel.

The Palestinian Authority foreign minister Riad Malki, called the vote a diplomatic victory. It was the latest chapter in Israel's rocky relations with UNESCO, which it accuses of making decisions out of political considerations.

Both the Old City and the mosque will now be added to UNESCO's World Heritage List and the World Heritage Committee will gather every year to discuss their status.

Over the centuries, Romans, Jews, Crusaders, Mamluks and the British have conquered the city, which today lies in the southern part of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank.

Hebron, thought to be 6,000 years old, is considered by Muslims to be the fourth holiest site for almost 1,000 years.

ICOMOS opposed the Palestinian nomination, noting that it failed to highlight the "association of the wider town of Hebron with Jewish and Christian as well as Islamic culture... even though extensive remains testify to these links". There are around 200,000 Palestinians and a few hundred Israeli settlers living in the city center.

The Arab League (AL) on Saturday hailed a decision by the United Nations to register the Old City of Hebron as a World Heritage site under the State of Palestine.

The Tomb of Patriarchs, also the Ibrahimi Mosque, is believed to be the burial place of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

"And it's much [more] important than the decision that you just adopted".

"We praise this vote at UNESCO, which considers the Old City of Hebron and its heart, the Ibrahimi Mosque, as Palestinian cultural heritage", Abu Zneneh told CNN.

An unidentified Arab ambassador to the UN's peak scientific and education body meant to support Israel in a hotly contested vote on Hebron Friday, according to screenshots published by the Yedioth Ahronot newspaper.

The Rapporteurs said Palestinian human rights defenders, including Mr. Amro, have faced a long pattern of harassment, intimidation, discriminatory treatment and physical interference from the Israeli military and settler groups.

"It's disappointing and embarrassing to see UNESCO denying history and distorting reality time after time to knowingly serve those who try to wipe the Jewish state off the map", he said, according to local news site Haaretz.

The Ibrahimi Mosque has always been a flashpoint of Zionist colonial violence.

Israel is already struggling to prevent the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Institution from erasing Jewish ties to Jerusalem's Old City and the Temple Mount.

"We are calling on the global community and the Trump administration t0 pull out of UNESCO completely".

Subsequent to the resolution, Netanyahu called it in a Facebook posting "delusional" and said that "this time they determined that the Cave of the Machpela is Palestinian, meaning it is not Jewish". And the site is in danger? Israel says the future of the settlements also must be decided through talks.
